Firefly Society

i chased a firefly out into the darkness, darting in starts after its flashing phosphorescence. suddenly the glow disappeared from my sight, and i found myself adrift in a forested blackout. i groped through the thicket of night in chaotic hallucination before eventually stumbling upon a web of lights cast across a clearing. it was the firefly society's winter solstice! i gazed back and forth, still mesmerized by neural phosphenes of my lost lightning bug. after the society's lyrical mirth had washed away my afterimage blindness, i withdrew once more chez moi, clutching my marzipan kachina and singing along to the music that only i can hear.
